The Blog from Bolivia is taking a break until August 1. Depending on your propensity toward conspiracy theories I am either:
1) Off raising funds from left-wing European and US NGOs so that I can lead a secret band of 1970s vintage Berkeley radicals to surreptitiously back Evo Morales in the coming Presidential election and therefore spark a global uprising against private ownership of everything from socks to baseballs.
or:
2) I am on vacation with my family.
Take your pick, comment to your heart’s desire, and I’ll be back August 1.

Hey Jim, do you think the forces of global capitalism, of American world domination, of corporate economic exploitation ever sleep, ever rest, ever go on, on vacation.
I'm sure they do. They've got a lot of expropriated money that they havn't spent a lot of time working for. I'm sure they party and vacation more than we ever thought of.
I'm reading a book that describes the details of how this is pulled off. It's called "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man." I highly recommend it. Fantastic.

I just went for a week to Czech Rep and Hungary.
Both countries are beautiful, people are nice and friendly. What one can't help but wonder what it was like when they were behind the iron curtain.
The first thing everybody should know is that neither country wanted to be communist - they were forced into it. The so-called "Democracy" center should be aware of this.
People were unhappy living under communism and their dissatisfaction costed them their lives: In the Czech Republic, you have the Prague spring, where half a million Warsaw pact troops invaded Czechoslovakia in order to avoid Dubcek from reforming the state. The cost in terms in lives and hopes was high.
In '69, a 21 year-old student (Jan Palach) poured a can of gasoline over himself and set himself alight.
I just wonder how depressing and desperating it must have been for a 21-year-old to do something like that.
Should we be surprised that not a word was said in this blog when Jim visited Prague?
In Hungary, the 1956 uprising against communist rule costed more than 25,000 lives, 20,000 arrests (2000 from those were executed) and 250,000 refugees. Was it caused by the innate consumism in human beings who had to wait 7 years for a crappy Lada car or 12 years for a telephone line? Think again.
Also, both countries have museums (the Museum of Communism in Prague and the House of Terror in Budapest) trying to explain life under communism. Needless to say, both depict communism as a really nasty, stupid, despicable, etc system, something that should be avoided at all costs.
Now, if you want to know what this has to do with this blog, there it goes:
First, Jim didn't say a word about it when he visited Prague. So I thought you all should know.
Second, communism is looming in Latin America, with Chavez and Fidel trying to stick their noses in other countries' businesses, notably Bolivia. For all of you, who think Evo is the answer for all problems, go read a history book, but one not written by Galeano. Read how hard it was for all these countries. Try to understand why it doesn't work. And, finally, don't romanticize Bolivia's problems as poor, good-natured people vs. evil, rich bastards. The only bastards here are communists forcing people to live in an medieval way.

oh, and: would everyone who really thinks evo morales represents the great hope for bolivia's future please step up and take your place next to the overstuffed strawman who so persistently populates these threads? honestly, i would like a head count. thus far, i've seen a lot of people make the assumption that jim and everyone who tends to agree with his general take on things loves evo, but i don't recall seeing actual evidence of that. i find it somewhat baffling.
Great point, Dan. Its too bad that McCarthyist paranoia is still with us and translates in this case into the demonization of anyone who won't demonize Evo.
I wish there were at least a rational debate about ideas and programs instead of this anti-communist drivel. I guess most people 'on the mainstream' don't realize that most modern socialists have long ago internalized the failure of the Soviet Union and its satelites, and therefore even more vehemently see the need for a DEMOCRATIC socialism.

Is Evo the great hope for Bolivia's future? Of course not! The great hope is a true democracy of equality and justice and sovereignty. That being said, and with the many faults I see in him, Evo has my vote in December.
