Thinking of our Friends in London
The Democracy Center has a good number of close friends and colleagues in London. I was just there with many of them a few weeks ago. Today we send our best thoughts out to them and the others who live in that vibrant city. It is not only those within bomb range who suffer today's events but a whole city of millions that has had normalcy changed in a heartbeat into fear and trauma.
We are working on an article related to the G-8 summit and the weekend's Live-8 concerts, but that will wait until the start of next week.

First, my condolences, too, to readers in London and those otherwise affected by the attacks there.
Second, japaza, you've already posted the same link here on another comment thread, and boli-nica has added other redundant comments/links to the same effect. It seems to me a bit of an insult to the rest of the readers at this site to imply that we are incapable of evaluating what we read here on our own. It is an ironic insult, at that, to be warned away by someone citing nothing more than another website with its own perspective on things.
I've been disappointed by the degradation of the tone in these comment threads of late. I was glad to see no comments posted for the first couple of days after the London bombings and this blog entry. What a letdown to see that the first one posted is another snipe at the host, presumably meant as a kind of pre-emptive attack on a report (on the G-8 meeting) which hasn't even been posted yet.
You've made your point. I humbly submit that, from now on, perhaps we can rise above the meta-debate of left/right name-calling and focus on content.

I for one think that maybe Bol-Nica, Nica-Bol or whatever fake name he or she uses (what courage of conviction, no?) ought to maybe get a job and stop making a career out of stupid posts, as if anyone cares.

Well Alberto, nice to see that you took Dan's advice about civility to heart.
Dan - what would you have us do?
Particulary those with a vested interest in Bolivia who feel that Jim's ideas and activities are actively dangerous? Be quiet if we don't like what Jim is saying or doing? Disagree with more civility?
My gosh, Jim's whole position sort of boils down to, "these protesters have a right to raise cain because of their discontent with an unjust system." I'd figure he'd appreciate us taking the same approach to his forum.
What's wrong with Boli-Nica saying, "hey, this is wrong, and here is my take on things."?
There's nothing uncivil about someone saying, even vehemently, that they think your politics are wrong and dangerous. I haven't reviewed his posts, but Boli-Nica, if memory serves, has been strongly opinionated but never called names or acted uncivily.
What is different about what he's saying about Jim and what Jim is saying about the IMF?
By internet forum standards, this is a pretty civil, if heated, atmosphere. I've seen very little outright name calling.
Finally, if I were simplify and accuse one "side" of being a little "lite" on real content, it would probably be those who post here with no real understanding of Bolivia, and supporting Jim because it fits comfortably in with their pre-made political views of the world.

Dan: I am going to post that link to ALL subsequent Jim's posts. You don't wanto to read,then don't. You think the point has been made, fine, skip my posts, they are always going to be same, except that I am going to add Boli-Nica's excellent follow-up.
But new readers to this blog need to know what kind of person this guy really is. So, if it bothers you, sorry, but there is nothing I can do. What bothers me is what this guy is trying to achieve in my country.
That is called freedom of speech.

I won't bother replying to Dan's attack on this thread.
What I will say is that people very close to me, have paid a very heavy price in their struggle to help break the cycle of coups and overthrowals, that dogged the country for most of its history. Starting about 20 years ago, for the first time it was possible to see a future of elected governments and peaceful successions, creating the kind of stability needed to really begin to tackle the serious problems facing the poor.
It is incredibly frustrating to see Evo Morales and his cohorts ripping away at that hard-won stability, and then wrecking a carefully thought out plan, that would be providing Bolivia with Billions of dollars worth of investment, and which would have left much needed cash in the country's coffers. As it stands now, Bolivia lost about 100 million bucks just in the last crisis, and is being shut out of further pipeline construction.
-- And I am annoyed by the spin that Schultz puts in his blog - and of how he supports Evo's plans. In the end it is undermining democracy.
