The Blog is One Year Old

This month the Blog from Bolivia turns one year old.
I started this on a lark, originally with the idea that it might be interesting to put up observations from time to time about life in Bolivia, a way to offer a little insight to those living far away who wanted to know something more about what it is like to live in this beautiful country.
A year later this Blog has 2,000 to 3,000 loyal readers a day. It has become an important information source for everyone from journalists to the worrying parents of US Peace Corps volunteers. All over Bolivia I keep running into people I don’t know who say, “Hey I read your Blog all the time.” Who would have thought?
After some encouragement we opened up a comments section, which has been, well, lively to say the least. A US journalist who passed through town recently said to me, “Well, the thing about Internet journalism is that you are basically writing to people who agree with you.” Hey man, check out the comments.
Thank you to everyone who has made this Blog a success, including the people who devote so much time and energy going after everything I say (and yes, I do miss the stalkers who used to add a link to an anti-Jim Shultz Web site to every posting). Everyone needs a hobby and I guess trashing me is as good as any. It keeps me honest.
Thank you all, for your interest, your ideas, and your support this past year. I think it is safe to say that 2005 has been an interesting time in Bolivia. And 2006 promises to be more interesting still.

You came and spoke to our SIT study abroad group when I was down in Bolivia Fall 2004...I have tried to stay up to date with the politics, and am excited about the election results with Mr. Morales winning the majority...thanks for you insightful comments about where things may go with Evo, I will keep checking your blog to see how things are going...

Thanks for such a wonderful job Jim! I agree that reading the comments has kept your blog lively and engaging. Been wondering where the 'elitists' and your other usual opponents have been the past two days??? Yeah, probably suffering from a horrid hang-over.
I observe reporting of the election results not just by media but also by some bloggers to be misleading at best and outright disinformative and manipulative at worse. Particularly those who have chosen to capitalize on the Evo photo where he appears with Chavez and Castro as if we are to infer THEIR thousand fears from what that picture paints.
I am quite inspired by our people who achieved regime change through their ballots and are now ready to face the difficult times ahead with ingenuity, enthusiasm, hope, creativity and hard work. When the red party battled the blue party in the US, the active electorate was quite small relative to those eligible to vote. Here in Bolivia, the blue party won because it actually presented an alternative to the red party's platform and because people cared enough to walk for hours to the remote polling stations. Maybe as you seemed to share during your travels on the campaign trail, also because if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the "status quo" the cleptocratic problem. On the surface it seems we now have a near 2 party system, but soon we will see the Podemos brigades dismantle just as easy as they were convened.

I guess most was said above, but I'll post my message anyway.
It was not after going abroad from Bolivia on my own will that I started to realize how the work like the one you and your team's carry out make a good difference in Bolivia.
I hope there is more of you working and making a better country in every sense.

I'm suprised to find the Blog is only one year old today. I first found it last Febuary I think. I thought it was a long established thing.
