The Only White Guy Around

Entebbe, Uganda

With my work here done I had a day to see what Uganda looks like outside of a conference room. I long ago made it a practice to stay anywhere I go an extra day.

I headed out on the back of a "boda-boda", the motorcycles that serve as taxis here. With the equator's warm wind whipping back my hair, in short order I ended up at the Botanical Gardens. The Botanical Gardens is pretty much the only tourist attraction Entebbe's got, if you exclude the airport, where Israel once staged a famous rescue raid three decades ago.

If Dr. Seuss had designed a nature park, this would be it. Wildly high trees with impossibly wide branches stretched out like long stringy arms. Vines growing up the sides. Purple flowers with pungent smells. Enormous birds, looking like storks that got blown up three sizes too big. Black and white monkeys hopping from branch to branch. Lake Victoria reaching out to the horizon.

The mere mention of the Garden to anyone here is immediately met with, "They filmed Tarzan there you know. The old version with Johnny Weissmuller, in black and white." Dr. Seuss meets Tarzan.

As the sun started to sink I sat down on a slope. Within minutes I was encircled by a group of a dozen Ugandan kids, loaded with a string of questions.

"Which country are you from? [Bolivia through them for a loop.]"

"When do you leave?"

"What kind of airplane do you fly on?"

"Do you have a camera?'

After taking some pictures and showing them off on my 2 x 3 inch digital screen (this made them very happy) they started to play with my hair. In Uganda there is basically one hairstyle – girl or boy, man or woman – and that style is a quarter inch of fuzz. As they messed, laughing, with my forever-in-need-of-a-haircut brown mop, I was reminded of the day my Afro-Brazilian friend Barto visited the orphanage that my wife and I ran in Cochabamba. Bolivian kids had never seen ANYONE with long dreads before and we couldn't get them to keep their hands off all that wild hair.

Kids, the universal kindness in all cultures. Kids and hair they have never seen up close before, the universal curiosity.

Bolivia and Uganda, two countries separated by a world. Two countries joined by their simplicity and humility. It is good to live in cultures that are simple.

Simple, simple. Meaning fewer of something, I suppose... My guess would be the number and kinds of human relationships are not fewer among Ugandans than USians. Less exposure to images, ideas - is this what is meant by simple? Less diversity among the people in worldviews, life expectations? Greater racial and cultural homogeneity? I have also felt moved by what I perceived as the beauty of a "simple" culture, but I think it is good to be critical of this response. In that way maybe we can figure out just which aspects of other cultures are really worth admiring, so as better to change our own.

Not to sound overly critical. But I think I might agree w/ the above comment. From my experience, I've found that those who think life is good in simple cultures are usually those who have enough wealth to make such simplicity enjoyable. Most of my family in Bolivia leads simple lives, but would prefer some more complexity that comes w/ greater income, more consumer choices, better educational & career opportunities, and the cosmopolitan advantages of travel & knowing other cultures. I, too, like simplicity. But simplicity, for me, is when I choose to discard material (or non-material) things to trim down my life. When those choices are made externally (not by me), then it's not simplicity, it's poverty & lack of freedom. Just a thought.

But, yeah, my experience has also been that kids are wonderful all around the world. They all seem to have the same general potentials, hopes, aspirations. The key is to find ways to ensure that their choices are as broad as possible. Not as simple as possible.

my personal experience tells me that simplicity is indeed a virtue and a blessing. i have learned that it is distinct from poverty, which is violent and negative, but that the two often come together. thus, it is appropriate to simultaneously observe the joy of many of the world's poorest people and attribute it to simplicity, while continuing to struggle with them against the poverty that threatens their very existence. it is despite poverty that their simplicity allows for certain joy and fulfillment, even alongside deprivation and misery. that said, it is harder for wealthier people to achieve simplicity in the modern world, because it is not imposed upon them along with the violence of poverty.

one of the challenges in searching for ways of attaining sustainable "development" is to do so in a way that allows people to maintain the simplicity that is part of the richness of many cultures lacking in material wealth, while still offering them more opportunities and the chance to be protagonists in their own lives and communities. only by allowing the poor to be protagonists of their own liberation from poverty do we ensure that the curses of our own far-from-simple culture (speaking for north americans here) is not imposed under the guise of "development." indeed, in terms of enjoying the kind of abundance that comes with simplicity, poor societies are often far more developed than our own.

The discussion here brings to mind the following quote from well, I don't remember:

"Live simply so that others may simply live"

Bolivian me is also tremendously inspired by the South African experience where the white elite got no other choice but to move over while the mostly black folk chose to forgive but not forget and be protagonists!!!
