One Night in Cochabamba
Readers:
We are treated once again to a guest Blog from my Democracy Center cohort, Christina Haglund. In this post Christina writes with great passion about one night in Cochabamba -- of coca, life on the street, and about the lives of the people who struggle mightily just to get by. Enjoy!

One Night in Cochabamba
I was chewing coca, and feeling a zany jolt similar to a double espresso. It is Thursday night and people are out. There are toddlers running around the plaza, children chasing the wind and infants seemingly mummied to their mothers. People are walking. I think they find it their most reliable source of transportation. I know I do.
A vacant doorway is a hard find in the early evening. All manner of faces, from the the fresh ones of children to the wrinkled ones of the old, curiously meet my eyes. People don’t shut their doors here when it gets dark. They enjoy their public space without fear, even when the moon is out.
So I hit the streets, without definite destination, my green bag of coca leaves in my hand.
The tasty treat that is chewing coca begins with a ritual of preparation. First you rip the small green leaves from their stems and then pile them in between your cheek and gum, until you start to have a look of a happy chipmunk. In quick order, the wad in your mouth produces a flavor-filled tea, created by the combination of saliva, coca leaves and legia, a sweet or salty nugget that activates the alkaloids of the coca. And the taste lasts for hours!
Like coffee, coca suppresses the appetite and contains caffeine. It is the Andean version of Starbucks, though much richer in calcium, iron, protein, and almost all of the vitamins of the alphabet. And, unlike coffee, coca is considered sacred.
I come upon two adolescent sisters, both wearing apron bibs with giant pockets for easy access to change. Each has a well-organized basket filled with cigarettes, an assortment of candy, lighters and maybe some cookies. We sit on some concrete steps. One of the girls yawns.
What time is it?
1:30 a.m.
How late can you sleep in tomorrow?
We have class at 8 a.m.
Their mother arrives. Buenas noches, I tell her. Buenas días, she corrects me. She has a basket with the same goods as her daughters. She also carries a bag filled with empty plastic bottles. She can sell a kilogram of the discarded bottles for one Boliviano. Buckets and washtubs and plastic bins are made out of the collected and returned bottles.
And the people – the ones with holes in their clothes, holes in their walls, holes in their pockets, the ones who will never make their ends meet – they will make about 15 cents for bringing in just over two pounds of plastic.
The money is in aluminum cans, she tells me. For those she gets four Bolivianos for a kilogram.
What do you do in the daylight hours? I ask her. She goes to a corner, the one where she and dozens of other women shout out offers of cheap labor services to passersby.
I wash clothes!
I clean houses!
And in your country? Could I live better? Oh how I hate this question. Yes you could, I think to myself, but only because the majority of the world struggles to survive.
Just like you.

The post is very interesting. However, I think it has a lot of fiction and I need to clarify a couple of things.
First, Coca could be common in the west part of the country among indigenous people... but not all Bolivians chew coca. I don´t do it, my friends don´t do, my family doesn´t do it. I am a middle class from Cochabamba, and I can teel everyone, that Coca is not THAT common. Perhaps among "artsy" people and people that likes to pretend to be indigenous. Miners chew coca, workes chew coca, but not everyone at everytime, that is just fiction!
The second thing is that "people don’t shut their doors here when it gets dark" is also fiction. People do shut their doors, because if you don´t do it you get robbed. Poverty, Imigration, bad governmental policies, a lot of trash from Hollywood has created a wave of violence, and if you don´t shut your door, there is a chance you will get robbed.
It is very tempting to create an idea of Bolivia as a "paradise", where everybody chews Coca and everybody is so happy and friendly. But that is not the true, Bolivia is a very complex country, with a lot of diffrent cultural and ethnical backgrounds.
I liked the post, but I think I prefer Jim´s, as they are more real.
I appreciate the post by Arturo. I visited Bolivia in September, 2003, and I saw and felt the complexity he describes, not the simplified version that Christina wrote about. I know that her post is her opinion, her impressions, and she is entitled to her conclusions. But perhaps a better title to her post would be "A Day in A Life" because that is the realism--the rest is her conjecture.
I would advise the same caution when walking the streets at night as in any other city--it's better to pair up. Be open and friendly if you wish but don't be so naive as to assume that all people are friendly and can be trusted. Bolivians aren't happy little children, they are adults, most who as Christina described, are struggling hard to keep their families with a roof over their head and food on the table; some Bolivians have strong political agendas, some Bolivians are indifferent or have strong negative feelings about tourists, Americans in particular...the point being, don't assume anything.
Thanks for your thoughts, Christina. I hope you don't feel as if we are piling on the criticism. But I think these commenters make an important point. I'll add one more (that they may or may not agree with.)
You said that the eyes of young and old met yours with curiousity. I wonder if they were curious as to why an American would be chewing coca?
There's definitely some dissonance there. I assume the Democracy Center doesn't work you to the bone from dawn to dusk - and surely you are able to find enough meals to satisfy the notorious American appetite.
It's a dirty habit that involves a lot of spitting and a very controversial leaf. Since many Bolivians eschew chewing coca for for a variety of obvious reasons, it must be especially puzzling to see an American walking around with cheeks stuffed full of the stuff.
I don't think it is wrong for you to chew coca -I'm not making this a moral issue. But given your position as a wealthy foreigner whose government is opposed to its production, you might ask yourself why you choose to chew it (regardless of your opinion of U.S. foreign policy) and whether giving it up would be a better idea all things considered.
For my part, after giving it some thought, I chose to stop using coca out of sensitivity to these types of considerations, among others.
Best,
PR
Good grief people!!! Lighten up and take someone else to task - here is a short, simple, entry about one gringa's night on the town, surely there are worse injustices lurking about in cochabamba!!!
Good grief again! Christina, a very poignant story, a rivetting image of poverty - a child working past midnight, and planning to go to class at 8 in morning. And a mother, hopeless, convinced that her situation con only improve outside Cochabamba. Yes, many of us don't chew coc, but who knows, with some marketing and endorsements, drinking coca tea, or chewing coca could turn into a chic and trendy social activity
"And in your country? Could I live better? Oh how I hate this question. Yes you could, I think to myself, but only because the majority of the world struggles to survive."
Could she really live better? As an inmigrant? As a Bolivian? Or do you mean that Americans live better?
Once I went to the US, and every time I ate fast food I could hear people speaking spanish in the kitchen, people speaking spanish while they clean the floors at the aiports, or while they rush to go from one job to the other (of 3 or 4 they have to "live better"). Diffrent accents, diffrent faces, all "latinos", south of the border, that believed that they could "live better".
Could she really live better?
How is this "better"?
I won’t insult myself pointing out how naive and theatric Christina writes, that was easy to identify; I am more interested on her following commentary;
“The tasty treat that is chewing coca begins with a ritual of preparation.
And, unlike coffee, coca is considered sacred.”
It is obvious that Christina, like Jim, is an admirer of the moron we have as Canciller; obviously, when political convenience is at stake, reason and the true come last. And the true is that there is no record, whatsoever that coca chewing was and ancestral ritual done by everybody en ancient Bolivia, that is talking only where quechuas and aymaras lived. There are records of coca being a very expensive commodity used only by those time’s rich.
There are also records that it was during the colony, Spaniard, that coca chewing began a common thing among workers, enslaved workers. Black slaves cultivate the leaves in Los Yungas under the control of the patrons and coca was forced to be chewed by the native pre colonial indian slaves in the mines and in the fields. Since the alkaloid coca leaves have is cocaine, caffeine has nothing to do with its effects, and you do not need legia to activate it.
So let’s not BS ourselves with this magic poison, coca chewing is as Bolivian, quechua and aymara if you wish, as the cholitas polleras and Mc Donald’s.
i liked the writing style and was simply dissapointed that this piece is so short.
Readers:
As you know, I don't usually comment on comments to our Blog, but this time one seems in order.
It is always amazing to me how angry people troll the world for someone to vent against, and such is often the case with Blog comments. We know better than to take it personally. For example, I am still looking for where Christina claimed that all Bolivians, or even any middle class ones chew coca. Anyone who saw that must be using drugs stronger than a coca leaf.
What Christina wrote about, with real authenticity and openness, is the insight she has gained from living in Bolivia and loving Bolivia. You are fortunate that she shares that with you. I'll take her dedication and openness against the railings of people too scared to even say who they are -- any day of the week.
And to those of you who liked this post from Christina, look forward to many more.
Jim Shultz
Actually, I'm just surprised to hear that coffee isn't sacred! Obviously Christina, you've never served aboard a Navy ship. Oh, and yes people can live better in the US (if they can get in) not because of any colonial oppression of the rest of the world, but because Americans tend to take for granted their blessings. They get lazy and anyone who is willnig to work hard has a better than even chance of doing extremely well.
Jim,
Sometimes you don´t need to say things, it is enough to imply them. I am not angry at all, I enjoy your blog and I am frequent reader. However, as I am a frequent reader I don´t like when a wrong image of my country is given. I know that a lot of people read your blog every day, and it is taken as a serious source of information.
For being clear. You said:"For example, I am still looking for where Christina claimed that all Bolivians, or even any middle class ones chew coca. Anyone who saw that must be using drugs stronger than a coca leaf."
Christina said: "It(coca) is the Andean version of Starbucks....."
So, if that is not implying that everyone or every middle class chews Coca. What is it? Starbucks in the US is as common as McDonalds, KFC or exremely big and useless cars. For going to a nicer cafe you have to be told where is it, or be very lucky to find it. If I understood wrong the image, my apologies for you and for Christine. May be she was trying to say that "some people use it to stay awake, as cofee"..... (and coca has not caffeine on it)
In any case, as I know that the mention on drugs was for me, I clarify: I don´t do drugs, I don´t support drugs, I don´t even support Coca growers. And I always write my name in every comment.
If Coca would have had the same publicity Coffe has since it was "discovered" until today, we probably would have a different view of coca chewing.
Middle (or High) class bolivians do not chew Coca mainly because it is regarded as a "disgusting indio habit" by the mainstream.
If the Blogger doesn't chew Coca nor his family, it doesn't reflect the fact that many other from his sphere actually do. Maybe not in the streets like our gringa friend Cristina, but I assure you that Middle class families buy their ocational green bag of Coca.
Thanks for the nice Post Cristina. I'm not saying it is accurate, but I liked the feeling it relays.
pablo
All of you, stop being a Bully.
If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.
Keep away your minds from my beautiful Bolivia.
Thank you!
felicidades por la escena, el episodio, la opinión. Tambien creo que la cosa es sagrada porque perdura...
Que hermoso has escrito Christina.
