Announcing, from The Democracy Center: A New Magazine About Bolivia!!

Democracy Center Magazine

Dear Readers:

For the last four months The Democracy Center in Bolivia has been working hard to bring you a new magazine – J’allalla Bolivia. J’allalla is a Quechua and Aymara word that means, roughly translated – Live!

Available in December, J’allalla will be a twenty-page blend of politics, culture, photography and more. The new magazine includes everything from a report on the first year of the new government, to interviews with Minister of Justice Casimira Rodriguez, to first-hand accounts of life on a landless peasant settlement and in an indigenous weaving community.

Take a look at the cover and working draft of the table of contents here!

To distribute the magazine we are looking for groups who would like to partner with us to get it to their members and friends. We will ship 10 to 50 copies to groups that are interested in distributing it, at a cost of $1 per copy to cover postage and printing costs. We will also be publishing J’allalla in electronic form, in full and for free on The Democracy Center Web site.

If you belong to an organization, a club, an academic department, or some other gathering of people who care about and are interested in Bolivia, join us in making J’allalla Bolivia a big success. Groups interested should contact us by November 1 at: magazine@democracyctr.org, with "magazine" in the subject line.

Thanks to all and J’allalla!

Oh goodie! More prejudice rhetoric.

Please consider printing the truth; you may even sell more copies that way.

And some people have no comprehension how difficult it is to live in Bolivia when lies and deceit are so often spread by the present government. Multiply that but the inability of this blog to present the facts without prejudice. Then again, I’d suppose that this forum is not meant for that; rather, it is intended to spread opinion.

There was once a time when man searched for truth and accepted it when he found it. Now man searches for anything that tickles his ears, makes him feel better and justifies his existence.

Since this is not a forum for truth rather one for “prejudice rhetoric”, I say Adios.

I will say that the name of your magazine is almost perfect to the labor the Democracy Center performs for the MAS Regimen, but I must say that J’allalla Evo! was much more appropriate, maybe you still have time to change it. I am not surprise for you to be Goebbels’s version of the Regimen’s propaganda en English, you being doing it for years.
Apart from the change of the name I will suggest, for the first edition, to put the photo of Evo’s ministers, one hand up in the air and in strait formation yelling J’allalla Evo the day they were positioned in their jobs, since that is where you probably got the idea of the title for your magazine.
I also read your content’s titles, come one, give it some balance so people might want to read the magazine; if you say you are so much into human rights, I dare you to have an article written by the Bolivian Human Right’s General Assembly in every edition; it shouldn’t be to difficult, they had supported the Regimen’s arriving to power.
I am pretty sure there are several fascist groups that will help distribute your magazine. In Bolivia, in internet, I can suggest for you to try http://bolivia.indymedia.org, they have proven to by much more virulent and racist than you. Hey! And don’t you go saying around that I don’t help or support you, I just gave you a lot of nourishment.
J’allalla Democracy Center!, yerba mala nunca muere.

Bolivialibre, the only fascist group I can think of these days might be that "Union Juvenil Crucenista", you know, the one with the khakis and green bands on their arms with the swastika looking cross... other than that, the fascists in Bolivia are dead or too old to start trouble. I really don't know where your ire comes from man... why are you so afraid of organizations like this one? why so much anger, hate and fear man? what happened to you?

watchlister,

Obviously your Bolivian experience is limited to the internet. If you ever been to Bolivia for any extended period of time you'd know better. From Jugete Rabios, Atar la Rata, RTP, the nice chant songs and speaches during marches, to the Aymara Talibanes, there are facists, or rather racists, in both sides.

Of course, in Jim's wacky world, one side can kill and violate human rights at will and with impunity. I dare you to guess which one.

Dude, I spent over a decade there. The Santa Cruz cambas (not all of them of course) can be very similar to the brown shirts in germany in the 30s. They appear 100 time more fascist to me. As for the people that keep attacking this website/blog, wow, your anger is a s big as your fear... your continuos postings show you are actually benefiting from this site!

I love how some people seem think they can determine a person's nationality and/or residency through simple comments. These same people that cry "prejudice" and "propaganda" and "mistruth" at every comment.

By the way, a person's nationality and/or residency has no bearing on the assumption that individuals on blogs should maintain at least a minimum of commonly accepted conventions in netiquette.

No matter what one's political leaning, they should refrain from being a flamer on blogs.

[I wonder what false assumptions will be thrown my way in response to this comment...]

In Quechua, a Native American language of South America, a huaca or wak'a is an object that represents something revered, such as an ancestor, a god or even a character trait. The term huaca can refer to a specific type of sacred or holy locale, or shrine, sometimes a place for veneration and ritual

I'm not sure why so man are attacking the announcement of a periodical. Right and left both understand that it will have a certain character. I'll watch the online edition. Whether I agree with Jim or not, I value what he has to say. It gives... insight.

As to the brownshirts in the 1930s, never met any of them personally, so I'm probably not qualified to make the comparison. Still, I have been surprised by the prejudice I've seen in Santa Cruz... and by the prejudice I've seen from the other side. I don't see either side as being on par with Hitler's Nazi party though. Evo doesn't call the indigenous the master race; he just wants rights for them above and beyond those for non-indigenous. The Cruceños aren't calling for the extermination of the indigenous; they simply don't want to be deprived of what they have, (earned or misgotten), based on someone else's definition of what's "fair".

I think its pretty hard not to touch upon things slightly "racist" or offensive when discussing a country like Bolivia that is so deeply divided. That is why it can be so explosive.

Watchlistes, at the beginning of the MAS movement, before they become a Regimen while in government, I only though that the MAS ideology was a mix of communism and fascism; I read and heard some people that on those times were comparing the MAS movement with Hitler, but I didn’t think so or I just didn’t it.
Today, after the MAS Regime has shown us the red poncho on where they really stand, I am convinced that they are a fascist organization with a lot of racism and prejudice. I am not alone on this one, several people, some considered intellectuals in our Country have actually written several public articles comparing the MAS regimen with Fascism, Nazism and Communism. You just have to read the local newspapers, other than Jim’s, and you will find a couple of such articles a month.
I will simplify things to you and I will use weekipedia to define MAS, it says: “Fascism is a radical political ideology that combines elements of corporatism, authoritarianism, nationalism, militarism, anti-anarchism, anti-communism and anti-liberalism. The governments and parties most often considered to have been fascist include Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler.”
The MAS regimen is built up in base of elitist groups of unions and cooperatives that are key components of the life in their regions in a medieval kind of way, which is very similar to corporativism. Their authoritarianism is shown every day, but their doings in the Constitutional Assembly will serve you as an example. Their Nationalism is clearer than water, just look at their hydrocarbon ideas, to little to call them policies yet. Their militarism is more than obvious, you talk about the “Union Juvenil Curceñista”, let me tell you; they are a flea in a dog comparing to MAS’s “Estado Mayor del Pueblo”; the dog. I will not say that the regimen is anti-communist, but the few hard core communist I actually befriend are all mad with Evo and think he has betrayed them; they still are all pro Lineras. MAS’s openly opposition to autonomies and Evo’s declaring free press as enemy of the state gives you a good example of why they are anti-liberalism. Anarchist they are not since they are seeking to become a state. You just have to add the racisms and prejudice openly demonstrated by several of Evo’s key components of his government and then you have the closest of Nazism it ever happened in Bolivia. You are probably confused because you think today’s Nazis are the white skinheads you probably see wherever is that you live. But you yourself are being prejudicial, like your mention of the Santa Cruz people, racism and Nazism is not a skin color issue, is an ideology issue.
Norman, you do not need to call your race the master race to be a racist, it is enough to have somebody wanting the raze he believes it is his to have like you put it “rights for them above and beyond those” of others. Cruceños and not cruceños alike are going to have nothing off that if we are all going to live in the same country.

I've pointed out the national-syndcalist roots of MAS, as party. That said: MAS is nothing like the Nazi party. There's a long distance between them. It's sad, actually, that the terms "fascist" and "Nazi" have been stripped of their objective meaning, and simply been reduced to mean "people I disagree with" or "people I find offensive." That kind of intellectual shortcut actually demeans the actual horrors of the Nazi regime. If Nazis are nothing more than "people we disagree with" then how can it really be that offensive? I'd be careful about how we use the term "Nazi" against opponents.

Ironically, demonizing opponents (such as calling them "Nazis") is a very fascistic tactic. It strips "the other" of legitimacy, and dismisses any counter-arguments. It makes it easy to not have to develop intellectual arguments or rebutals. We just sneer "Nazi!" and walk away. It's so dogmatically closed-minded.

I'd also point out that I don't think "all cambas" or "all kollas" are racist. Prejudice is a human condition. But the real "racism" is rather limited to small minorities on both sides. I agree that there are strong fascistic tendencies in Nacion Camba and the UJC (Union Juvenil Cruceñista). But the comite civico is a civic committee--and I fail to see how it's much differnt from the pro-MAS Estado Mayor del Pueblo. I could recommend some literature on the dark underbelly of "social movements" (even some interesting literature on how the flourising of social movements in 1930s Germany helped undermine the legitimacy of the Weimar Republic). But both MAS & its opponents are now "social movements" based ... representation is now poorly institutionalized or articulated through electoral representative institutions.

Sorry watchlister,

You're absolutely right, the only and ONLY racism to be found in Bolivia was from the UJC...and you're right, they march to the beat of Wagner in spectular rallies, where among other things they hail to Hitler and burn ayamara books.

The cocalero marches where they chant for death to yankees and death to k'aras must have been all part of a coca and altitute induced dream. The UJC was probably also behind the Aymara Talibans that De La Cruz was promoting (on Unitel, 'cause all others were hip to the trick)

Watchlister, you belong to that rare of breed of men like Jim who are the owners of the absolute truth. Our dissenting posts are really about anger and fear for the absolute and unquestionable truths this blog divulges.

I mean silly me...water is plentiful now in cochabamba, there were no cazabobos in the chapare, Gandhi would be so proud of the MAS tactics.

I mean...HOW DARE I QUESTION JIM AND MAS....I mean how dare I??

It is out of fear and anger that someone like mcentellas would say that all humans are predujiced. After all only k'aras are predujiced, ayamaras are working towards their "historical reinvindications" and if this involves rolling a boulder towards a bus filled with innocent human beings, well, let it be so. But if k'ara open his mouth in a soft breath he exhales a whisper and dares to say that we are all equal and the neither side is justified in using violence, then in your world, we must be NAZIS..

Welcome all to the revolution

The new magazine looks to be interesting.

I do want to note that the name of the magazine is not spelled correctly according to most linguistic conventions (or, more importantly, it is not correct according to the joint Bolivia- and Peru- established conventions for the orthographic representation of Aymara and Quechua words, nor according to the informal conventions implicit in earlier indigenous-language religious material). The apostrophe is used to respresent ejective glottal stops; the sound typically represented as j or h is not an ejective glottal stop, it is not even a stop. Using more established linguistic or Bolivia/Peru based traditions, this word could be spelled jallalla or hallalla.

Anyhow, this might appear nitpicky, but, on the other hand, it is the name of the magazine.

I look forward to taking a look at it.

best,

Benjamin

Centellas, I believe you will need to spend a little more time researching were MAS is standing today before being so emphatic about them no being fascist. You should know by now that politics and the beliefs and doings of political parties are absolutely dynamic and change positions according to their place in time and the people that compose them. It appears to me that you are one of the few persons that actually know something about this issue and separate Fascism form Nazism, will most scholars agree that the Nazis were in deed a fascist organization.
I will also ask you to search in yourself how open minded you think you are when you accuse those that do not agree with you of being short of intellect and “dogmatically closed-minded”; I believe you could be having a small ego attack. I will tell you one thing that might help you, history is really written by the ones that win the wars; if the Germans would have won WWII or a cease of fire reached will they still strong, we would have know as much of the Holocaust as we know of what happen in Communist Russia under victorious Stalin, in Cambodia under the also victorious Khmer Rouge, in Cuba under victorious Fidel, etc. Yes, we know that in all of those countries atrocities against humanity were committed after or during their victories, but how many of them suffered the fate of the Nazi leaders? none.
Comparing an entity like the MAS Regime with Fascism and Nazism when they are behaving that way doesn’t “demeans the actual horrors of the Nazi regime”; it actually remains humanity of the possibility of the return of those horrors if the power of such entity is not kept on check. The Nazis did not rule Germany without opposition before WWII, but their opposition was week, like the one against today’s MAS in Bolivia. During the war the opposition disappeared and the unchecked Nazis unleashed their reign of horror, you know, civil wars are wars; those it ring a bell to you in today’s Bolivia? Since you like to read, I recommend the following paper:
http://www.remember.org/guide/Facts.root.nazi.html
At the beginning it says, “The government of Nazi Germany was a fascist, totalitarian state. Totalitarian regimes, in contrast to a dictatorship, establish complete political, social, and cultural control over their subjects, and are usually headed by a charismatic leader”. V.P Lineras words in Warisata last September 21, while functioning as President in interim, more or less translated in “with the election of Evo Morales to the presidency we have total political control, now we will work to achieve total social and economic control”. The “cultural” they think they already have, since the Regime will never move their posture that 75% of Bolivians are what they believe is an indigenous race. I recommend for you to read the whole article, you could find it pretty “dogmatic”.
One more thing, failing to see much difference between the Civic Committees and the Estado Mayor del Pueblo (EMP) really shows that you know nothing about the later. The EMP is a paramilitary organization, like Mussolini’s “squadristy” or Hitler’s “Brown Shirts”. It started last October 2003 when the ousted of Goni and Carlos Mesa was decided; today is still active, but under the MAS Regimen and without the COB, which bailed out when MAS intended to take over the COB’s directive. Some new groups have being added to it; the Talibanes Indigenas in El Alto and the Juventud Guevarista in Santa Cruz. Today, they have being used mainly to enforce the Regimens rule within itself, these has happened openly in Quillacollo and Sacaba last month. You should ask yourself, why the government; which have the sole control of the army and the police, have a need to a paramilitary organization?
