Santa Claus is Coming to Town!
Okay, the nativity scene in my living room is now officially larger than the Boston apartment that I occupied in graduate school.
Being one of those people (there are a lot of us really) who is not aligned with the notion that Jesus Christ was the divine Son of God, Christmas time is a little tricky. As I write this I can look out my office window to a hill that sprouts the very largest Jesus in the world. Down below in the city, people are running around like crazed weasels getting ready for his birthday party. Me included actually. My eldest daughter and I spent the morning making our annual photo album for my wife. Don't tell her. It's a surprise.
Now, I have written abut the challenge of this once before, in a Christmas Eve newsletter inspired by the first introduction of a nativity scene into our house in 1997. Then my proposed compromise was that we should paint our Baby Jesus with glow in the dark paint. I lost that but was delighted to discover when we moved to Cochabamba that here they actually sell glow in the dark statuettes of Baby Jesus. I got one!
Thankfully, those of us who love Christmas but shy away from the virgin birth have a savior of our own – Papa Noel, St. Nick, Chris Cringle, the most northern gringo of them all – Santa!! And this year I have decided to make my mark on our family's Christmas tradition (the rest of them are Catholics) with music, very specific music:
He's making a list.
He's checking it twice.
He's going to find out who's naughty and nice.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
He knows when you are sleeping.
He knows when you're awake.
He knows if you've been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake.
My daughter Mariana who is 4 and in Christmas high gear is really into "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and has been listening to the classic version most of us grew up on, sung by I-haven't-a-clue. She's memorized it. So the other day I decided it was time to broaden things a bit and I burned a CD of LOTS of different people singing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." Now we can listen to it a dozen different ways, almost all of them better than the one that came with Frosty the Snowman.
Here, as a treat for our Blog readers, is my review of the best and oddest versions of Santa Claus is coming to town! And happily, you can hear a short snippet of any of these for free if you visit here (Don't download them, just click for the preview.).
The Worst: Regis Philbin
Do you need to ask?
Worth a Listen: The Jackson Five
Here is Michael Jackson in his full youthful splendor with his brothers before he became sort of whiter and weirder. It's got a beat.
Nostalgic: Captain Kangaroo
The captain that young US baby boomers grew up with teams up for a duet with Mister Green Jeans. If you don't know what any of that means definitely skip it.
Most Soul: The Supremes and the Pointer Sisters
I gotta call this a tie. The classic Supremes version slips in that very Motown new chorus, "Wooo, here comes Santa, comin', comin', here comes Santa, comin', comin'." Diana Ross and the girls backin' up have "you better not pout," down pat. Hard to beat. But when the Pointer Sisters belt this one out it seems clear that they are talking about a whole other kind of "bad." So, a tie.
Doesn't Really Work: Chris Isaac
What works for Neil Diamond covers does not work for Santa Claus. It's just a fact.
Didn't Even go There: The Carpenters
Maybe if Karen had lived and made a duet with Regis…
The One I Wish Existed: The Grateful Dead
Seriously, wouldn't you just want to listen to this one over and over and over? Maybe even as a combined effort with Dylan. Santa, this is what I really want this year!
Hands Down Best: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (Live)
Starts with Bruce heckling his band and asking if they have been rehearsing, asks Clarence of he wants a new sax, then asks the live audience to raise their hands if they've been good ("Not many. Not many"). Then he somehow turns Santa Claus into Thunder Road. Wipes Regis right out of your ears.
AND RUDOLPH
It's tempting to also go into the many fine covers of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (which Mariana calls the "Shiny Nose" song).
But, to be honest, there is no competition. There is really only one version of this song and that is the one by Tiny Tim. The ukulele cinches it.
Happy holidays to all readers of the Blog – whichever ones you celebrate!!

Okay, Jim, this is where we Jesus Freaks have you beat: virgin birth, manger, wise men, mystery star, angels and shepherds, Son of God, Word made flesh, all heaped on top of the sensible pagan solstice tradition (admittedly celebrated 6 months off in the southern hemisphere) of lights in the darkest nights of the year, plus the weird and wonderful German addition of indoor trees with fire in them and the gloriously gaudy Franciscan tradition of nativity scenes?! You really want to pit Santa on his own against all that? I'm afraid that's one fat man who just got himself a right jolly old whoopin'.
Plus, take away one poem and a Coke campaign and you are stuck with the fact that, whether one thinks him a slave-owning, sea-faring, horse-riding bishop from Spain (google Sinterklaas) or a reindeer-wrangling Sami toymaker from northern Finland (okay, the Finns are still debating this with their Swedish neighbors), the fact is that your boy was swiped from another land and another date - he's a 4th century Greco-Turkish bishop, just one more sucker for the babe in the manger, and particularly said babe's revolutionary preferential option for the poor. And his real day is December 6.
Now, if you'd picked a fairer fight - say, John Lennon vs. the Immaculate Conception on December 8 - you might have had us up against the ropes. But Secular Santa vs. Birthday Baby Jesus? Who here thinks I'm wrong in saying the Carpenter's kid wins hands down?
But now to more important matters: people here have often accused you of purposefully omitting certain facts from your blog - things they assume you find inconvenient, like Evo eating babies or the American Embassy treating Bolivia like a sovereign nation run by grown-ups - and usually I've thought these criticisms of you unfair. But today is different. Jim, I simply cannot abide your flagrant, violently conspicuous failure to mention Gene Autry in your above post. He rock(abilli)ed the tinsel out of both of those songs, and his half-spoken, half-sung intro to Rudolph makes it THE definitive version. Shame on you.
Feliz Navidad, amigos.
I'll be brief...it's Kris Kringle not Chris Kringle.
Jack Johnson also covered Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer really well :)
I always knew Bob Weir was in charge here! :)
I've gotta admit I'm a Tiny Tim fan too!
Watch out Jimmy Boy, Santa has given the MAS regimen a beautiful present to arrest and extradite foreigners that mess around with Bolivian politics; it is called Supreme Decree 24423, promulgated by Goni November 29, 1996. It is a decree that has being declared “unconstitutional” by the judiciary, but the MAS regime doesn’t care about following the laws or human rights, do they? Well, the “ponchos rojos”, (MAS’s secret police), had just sequestered Amauris Samartino, a Cuban dissident given asylum in Bolivia using the mentioned “unconstitutional” decree.
Did Amauris participate politically to try to topple a Bolivian Government with a “Water War”? No, he was just exercising his “constitutional” right as a permanent foreign resident to participate in a “pacific” demonstration asking for “democratic” autonomy in the country.
It will be interesting if you ever mention this violation to a person’s human rights in Bolivia using a decree signed by the man you blame for several murders and even genocide; interesting Evo so easily use Goni’s decrees and sends, Goni style, military troops to control hot spots and still claims that Goni should stand trial for crimes against humanity. It will also be interesting to see if you post something about the Bolivian “democratic” Government of MAS trying to extradite a man to Cuba where there are NO “human rights” and where people is murdered and tortured just because they want to live free. Amauri libre, YA.
I hate to admit it (not because it's Bolivia Libre but because the point of this post was to lay off the politics for a few lousy days for the holidays), but I was curious about this law, too.
I read this article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/28/AR2006122801050.html
From this description, I can't imagine this law could possibly be applied by any government in a fair and evenhanded way. There are a million ways that myriad foreigners are involved in Bolivian politics, and rightly so.
Does this make international human rights monitors subject to arrest? Missionary priests who comment on the signs of the times in homilies or base community gatherings? For that matter, to put a less hostile twist on the questions above: does this not constitute an implicit threat to The Democracy Center, the Bolivian Solidarity Network and others that they are only being allowed to carry out their work for as long as their work is deemed insufficiently problematic for the regime in power?
I understand that a Cuban exile settled in Bolivia by the US government who suddenly gets involved in right wing opposition/separatist movements is more than a little annoying to the Morales administration, but reading that the man was arrested under such a law was alarming to me.
Any observations, comments, explanations from the Democracy Center or others would be appreciated.
Dan,
First, it is not a law, it was a presidential decree, signed by Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada; the one that human rights activists wanabies want to process for genocide. The decree was deferred almost immediately to the constitutional tribunal by one of the several human rights watch groups we have in Bolivia and declared precedent; which supposedly could not be use until a final decision is made abut it, something that never happened.
Amauris come to Bolivia not as a political refugee but as a dissident, established legally in Bolivia and married a Bolivian woman. Now, the MAS’s regime is demonstrating once again their totalitarism and non interest towards human rights, using their power in the Judiciary, where a MAS oriented judge already ordered Amouris to be sent back to Cuba for the “alleged” crime of interfering whit Bolivian Politics. “Alleged” is the word even the government ministers are using.
Since many groups already defended Amouris human rights, funny thing that we did not here anything from the groups registered as human rights advocates, so much for theirs allegations; but from those groups the democracy center always accuse to be right winded.
Now, the UN high commission for the refugees is behind this case and Amauris will be expelled of the Country as a “Political Refugee”, something that only happened in Bolivia in the past under “unconstitutional military rule”. This shows, one more time, that if we do not pressure this regimen towards democracy, there will be just a matter of time for the first Bolivian born to be declared political refugees.
