In Memoriam: Lola Almudevar

Readers:

Events, and violence, are unfolding quickly in Sucre, the site of Bolivia’s combative Constituent Assembly. We will certainly be providing coverage of these events here on the Blog shortly. However, we dedicate this space today to some tragic news close to home for the small community of foreigners living here, the tragic death early this morning of one of our own, BBC correspondent Lola Almudevar.

Jim Shultz

In Memoriam: Lola Almudevar

If you follow the news in Bolivia from overseas, via outlets such as the Associated Press, the BBC, Reuters, the San Francisco Chronicle or a host of other media, more than likely you owe that news to one of the handful of adventurous young people who come here from abroad willing to go great lengths to get the story. Bolivia is not an easy country to cover, and often being a reporter here comes at great risk.

At about three am Sunday morning, one of the best young foreign journalists I have met here paid the ultimate price. Lola Almudevar, 29, a correspondent for BBC radio, the San Francisco Chronicle, and other news organizations, was killed in a head-on collision en route from La Paz to Sucre to cover the political explosions underway at the Constituent Assembly. With her in the car was another talented young foreign correspondent, Eduardo Garcia, a 31-year-old Spaniard who covers Bolivia for Reuters. As I write, he is in critical condition and in surgery in a La Paz hospital. Two Bolivian occupants of the car, and two occupants of the truck they collided with are also dead.

The two young journalists made a snap decision to head to Sucre late Saturday. I wasn’t there when they made the decision, but I know just the conversation they had about it. I was with them last weekend, at a barbeque at Eduardo’s house in La Paz. They both told me about another rush trip they had made to Sucre more than a month ago, at another time when it looked like political events at the Assembly might explode. Both were clear that they had a responsibility to be wherever breaking news was going to happen. It was how they viewed the pact of being a foreign journalist.

The road to Sucre is a dangerous one even during the day. At night, even under last night’s full moon, it is a trip not everyone would be willing to risk. If you are a reader or listener to foreign news from Bolivia, they took it for you.

Lola Almudevar was from Nottingham England, the daughter of a Spanish father and British mother. Her trajectory toward being a working journalist a hemisphere from home was no more direct than most of those who come here. She worked for a time for the European Union in Brussels, on international labor protections. Later she morphed into being a video producer, winning just this year an award for her co-production of a BBC television program, “Alexandra Road.”

She came to Bolivia a half year ago, and clearly loved the place. Her style of journalism did not involve sitting in the capital waiting for news to trickle out from official sources. She traveled deeper and more often into the heart of the country than almost any journalist I have met here. She filed stories, solid ones, on the children of Bolivian workers who have migrated abroad, on the 40th anniversary of the death of Che Guevara, on the gas issue, an interview with President Evo Morales, and on coca.

She was also the kind of spirit that made people want to be around her. I asked her last weekend, “Do you ever not smile?” Laughing, she explained to me that, actually, her propensity to grin non-stop got her in trouble when she first appeared in video as a journalist. “They told me I needed to frown in order to look serious.”

This afternoon, returning home from a family trip to the countryside, I received news of Lola’s death as soon as I walked in the door. A little while later, while downloading my backed-up emails, I found one from Lola sent Friday afternoon. It included the recording of a BBC radio piece she had just filed on coca, and which I knew she was proud of. She added a short note, “The voice overs they chose this time are priceless!” I am sure she meant the odd match-up of thick British accents speaking the English translations of coca growers from the Chapare. A week ago I’d confessed to her that every time I traveled to Britain I felt like I was in a Monty Python film.

Even though it probably violates about 35 different copyright protections, we posted the piece on our Web site, because we thought that one way to honor Lola would be to let people listen to the last piece of journalism she would ever produce. Click on the link here (and be a bit patient, it’s a large file).

Eduardo has our best wishes for a full recovery. Lola’s family has our deepest sympathies. We hope they know that she will be remembered with great affection here by those who knew her here; in a country that she clearly did love.

A note Monday evening: I did not expect, but am glad to see, that this post has become a place for friends and admirers of Lola's to express themselves about what she meant to them and how they feel affected by her death. Later this week I will copy these comments and forward them on to Lola's family in the UK, and to her friends here in Bolivia. I am sure what people have had to say here will mean a great deal to them. Jim

Truly shocking. I know from speaking to her from back home in the UK how much she was enjoying what she was doing in Bolivia. As old friends and colleagues we were both counting down the weeks until I could visit La Paz and congratulate her on everything. What a loss.

I had the privilege of working with Lola at the beginning of her career. She was (and i can't believe i'm writing in the past tense) a vital, enthusiastic, talented and intelligent journalist who was a professional through and through.
She got back in touch with me a few months ago and we swopped e-mails ; she sounded like she'd found the right place for her both personally and professionally and i remember feeling happy for her finding the life she wanted.
I think all of us who were lucky enough to have spent time with her should be grateful for that time now.
We've lost one of the good ones...

I filmed her first ever piece to camera, she only needed a couple of takes. Then I made her do it in Spanish, she nailed it first time of course - she had knack of taking things in her stride like that! She was such a great person to be around and my heart goes out to those closet to her.

I never met Lola but I read and listened to her reports from Bolivia with great pleasure. Just this weekend I laughed and sat up to listen as a presenter on the BBC World Service mispronounced her surname before introducing yet another superb report from her. Sadly, it was her last. I know from a colleague who was interviewed by Lola, and from the very moving tributes on your site and from the BBC, that she was a delightful person. It is clear that she was already an outstanding professional even at such a young age. I should like to convey my most heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. I would have been proud to call Lola my friend and I will miss her voice.

We met Lola just over three years ago when she reported on our family tragedy. She was so genuine and continued to keep in contact with us; so much so that she became our friend.
She was an inspiration; someone who was really interested in people and their stories.
We have shared her South American adventure through her blog, and like so many others, were excited by the fact that she had planned to come home for Christmas.
Her last emials were full of life, hope and happiness- that's how we will remember her.

To Lola's family- we are better people for having your lovely daughter in our lives

We will miss her dearly, knowing that she is not with us any more. But we shall also remember the happiness that she brought into ours and so many other peoples' lives. Her family are very much in our thoughts at this difficult time.

Dear Lola,
It is hart to believe that we will not see you again and since we heard this terrible news about you, we have tried to re-capture the moment that you said "Adios" to us and good bye to our neighbours in Alexandra Road. You were so excited of your long journey ahead to South America, the land were we came from and that you so eagerly wanted to explore. Your curiosity about people took you to Patagonia in Chile to meet another 'Lola', the grand mother of one of your closest friend, Pablo. Your interest in people made you a truly genuine journalist, you instinctively knew that anyone has a very personal story.

We think of your mum, dad, sister and brothers. How hard it will be for them to come to terms with your departure.

Hasta siempre Lola. Adios.

As we give tribute to Lola's accomplishments let's also take action to prevent violence against the reporters who are covering these events in Sucre and elsewhere in Bolivia.

To the friends, family, and admirers of Lola that have added their thoughts here:

I thought you would appreciate knowing that on Monday there was a leap of 3,000 visitors to The Democracy Center Web site, a direct measure of how many people out there are thinking of Lola. In fact, so many people read this Blog post on Monday that our server crashed for a short time, a suitable tribute in a technological age.

On Friday I will copy and send all of the beautiful comments here to Lola’s family. I think they’d like to have them. Also, added to all of the various other testimonials that have come in the past few days, here is a brief Blog just posted by editors at the San Francisco Chronicle, for whom Lola also did reporting this year from Bolivia.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/indexn?blogid=16

Lastly and importantly, our friend Annie Murphy in La Paz, wrote today to let me know that Eduardo Garcia, the young Reuters reporter severely injured in the same crash that took Lola’s life, is doing well after major surgery there. His survival is a welcome miracle in the midst of a horrible tragedy.

Best to all,

Her reporting on Bolivian children, the marginalized and the dispossessed, is a valuable contribution to the understanding of the many problems Bolivia faces at this particular time in its history.

Thanks also DC for this tribute and it comes as no surprise that you guys worked together...

Loliten (as I used to call you),

Gosh, I still cannot believe I won't see you again. I am in La Paz, trying to follow your last steps and it is just too heartbreaking. We've met this past August, when we were both working on the Che story, you for the Guardian and I for the Observer. And just we clicked immediately. When I was in Buenos Aires and you in La Paz we spoke almost everyday. Then I came here for a few days and it was the same. Then we've met in Lima and it was just fantastic. And I will never forgive myself for not having spent more time with you then. There was something so particular about the way we (joking) insulted each other all the time. The last e-mail I've got from you, last week, in its last sentence it simply says: 'I'm not from Lesta you p***k!' And I laughed so much. As I always did when I was talking to you. We were supposed to meet in Buenos Aires in less than ten days, for another eternal laugh session. You were always making fun of me as I was 'so posh' because I went to Oxford. But I was a bluff at Oxford, like another great bluffer at Oxford I would like to quote out loud for you just now, WH Auden:

'Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message (s)He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.'

Gosh, I'll miss you,

Andrés
