Hillary Clinton Questioned About Bolivia in New Hampshire
As frequent readers of this Blog know, one of our projects this coming year at The Democracy Center is "Voices from Latin America", in which we will be helping bring questions and perspectives from Latin America into the important 2008 election debate.

On Monday, on the eve of the pivotal New Hampshire primary, a friend of ours, Tim Provencal, a former Maryknoll lay missioner in El Alto, joined the effort by asking Hillary Clinton a question about Bolivia at a campaign forum in Dover. You can watch his question and Senator Clinton's response by clicking on the video link above. Stay tuned for more questions about Bolivia and Latin America aimed at U.S. Presidential and Congressional candidates throughout the year.

It's refreshing to hear a voice that recognizes who Evo Morales is in the U.S. and understands the complexity of the situation. She is likely one of two candidates that understand this, the other one being McCain. However, both have participated in the exlpoitative capitalism machinery that has kept Latin America in the situation it's in for the last 160 years, starting with the Mexican-American War followed up in 1898 with the Spanish-American War and further incursions into Latin American sovereignty.
Perhaps Latin America's best chance for real economic development is the conditions-free investment from China. Once that grows large enough, it will get U.S. attention.

It was not capitalism and the US (obviously not innocent)that has kept Latin America in its situation.... What about the Soviet communist/subversive effort? What about Spain and the Brits.... Oh and let’s not forget the Latin Americans...It has always primarily been the Latin Americans themselves.
Pure Socialism is for the mediocre and the incompetent. This continent will continue to wallow in its own misery until they stop blameing others and get to work on it improving themselves.... Brazil, Chile, Argentina, even some of the Venezuelan efforts if Chavez can control his own meglomania.

The only ones that can be blame for LatAm's dire condition are its own people. Including indians who were happy chewing coca instead of starting a revolution 500yrs ago.

Yea, all the anonymous commentors are right. The U.S. and Western Europe have had nothing to do with keeping Latin America as their little source of cheap resources and Banana Republics. Give me a break. The unfair trade agreements and U.S./European farm subsidies have perpetuated such an un-level playing field that there is no fair or free trade that would allow Latin American economies join the top tier.
And calling someone a socialist doesn't make them one. Name one socialist idea I mentioned.
Also, I use China as an example of what is happening and as a warning to the U.S.. Western economies can continue to treat Latin America poorly and reap the consequences of China coming in. Even the very much non-socialist publication like The Economist discusses the problem in these terms. I hope that Latin America doesn't turn to China as its major trade partner and economic investor, but people interact with those who treat them well and the U.S. has a long history of doing the opposite.
Free enterprise and free trade (which is something that the U.S. and western Europe haven't even come close to practicing) aren't socialistic ideals. So slow down on the political characterizations and just read some history and consider ideas. I know thinking is hard, but it's worth it.

I completely agree with Marcelo, Marcela y Boris. If anyone's seen Quien Mato la Llamita Blanca, he reminds me of the French coca advocate...a total parody and disservice to the true cause.
If you don't like your tax dollars going to protect American interests then move to Bolivia and pay taxes there.
If Bolivia wants to elect in a landslide someone who thinks U.S. capitalism is the "worst enemy of humanity" then they deserve what they get.
Thank you Jim and friend asking the question. I hope people like you continue in efforts that can only help Evo and the Bolivian democratic elected government.
Only smart and caring US presidents can see the reality of our continent.

So you think it's in US interest to have China all over Latin America? The interest of the American people interest isn't served by predatory trade and market practices (the interest of the elite economic giants is). It would be served by fair and free trade practices, as would the interest of Bolivia.
I think is a very good example. I would like that more people should be able to understand this message.

The problem of a white man in pseudo-indigenous garb chewing coca isn't just that it's a rough equivalent of black face. That's bad enough. But add to that the idea that it reduces Bolivia to a parody of itself. Could the question have been asked w/o resorting to tired cliches & racial stereotypes? I should hope so.
I'm glad someone is asking candidates about Bolivia. But doing it in such a manner is not only insensitive to actual Bolivians, it's also counter-productive. If you want candidates to give serious attention to Bolivian issues, try addressing them in a serious way.

One more comment... if he has supposedly lived in Bolivia most of his life, how come his Spanish sounds like that of a New Yorker who has been speaking it for barely a year?
Frank IBC...Get a hold of yourself. First of all, Tim never said he lived in Bolivia all of his life. Secondly, who are you to criticize someone else's language skills? Have you ever stepped outside of your own country's borders to even attempt to speak another language, or do you only speak the language of judgment?!
To those who were offended by Tim's video...I thought he did an incredible job of psoing a practical question to a US Pres. candidate. One would have to know who Tim is to understand that he meant no harm. I knew Tim and his family from when they lived in El Alto and they were people who completely immersed themselves into the Bolivian culture, living among their impoverished neighbors in Amachuma and the Aymaran people loved them and considered Tim as one of their own. He danced in his community's festivals, participated in rituals and happenings there and truly was and is someone who is in solidarity with Bolivians. There was even quite a large gathering at the airport bidding them farewell as Tim and family left to return to the US and pleaded for them to return soon. So chill out and realize that Tim only had the best of intentions when posing a great question to Hilary.
Listen to the video, at 1:20. Unless I've got too much wax in my ears, he says "I've lived in Bolivia for forty years."
And yes, as a matter of fact, I do speak Spanish. A lot better than Mr. Provencal. And yes, I have stepped outside my country's borders, many times. In fact, three of those times, it was to visit Bolivia.
As I said previously, if one is going to use the term "judgemental" as a perjorative, one should refrain from making "judgemental" statements himself. And also refrain from jumping to conclusions in the total absence of facts.

First, I apologize for my over-sensitivity. Second, I want to emphasize that I didn't use the term "white trash" to offend, but rather to point out that I could be considered one (through my mom's side of the family). There's a long history of self-described "progressive" commentors here attacking me (and others) of "mixed" background as somehow "genetically inferior". Which, perhaps, also explains my hyper sensitivity.
